HBO is gearing up for the October release of “Aka Mr. Chow,” an original documentary film directed by Nick Hooker (known for HBO’s “Agnelli”). The film is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, October 22, at 9 PM on HBO and will also be available for streaming on HBO Max.
Produced by the Oscar-nominated Diane Quon (noted for “Minding The Gap”), with executive production, writing, and editing by Emmy-winning editor Jean Tsien (known for HBO’s “The Apollo” and “76 Days”), and further executive produced by Emmy-nominated Graydon Carter and Annabelle Dunne (associated with HBO’s “Everything Is Copy”), “Aka Mr. Chow” delves into the life of Michael Chow. Born as Zhou Yinghua in 1930s Shanghai, he overcame childhood trauma, personal loss, and systemic prejudice with his creativity. He eventually became an actor and artist before adopting the identity of Mr. Chow, opening his iconic restaurants. After achieving fame and fortune in the West, Mr. Chow reconnects with his Chinese heritage and reemerges as the artist M, finding solace in painting.
The documentary features a captivating blend of imagery showcasing celebrities like Mae West, Calvin Klein, and Andy Warhol. It also includes interviews with artists such as Peter Blake, Julian Schnabel, and Ed Ruscha, as well as family members like Cecilia Zhou, Maximillian Chow, China Chow, and Vanessa Chow. Author Fran Lebowitz, film producer Brian Grazer, friends, colleagues, and experts from the art world contribute to this compelling exploration.
“Aka Mr. Chow” is a production of Pulse Films, produced by Diane Quon, and executive produced by Graydon Carter, Annabelle Dunne, and Jean Tsien. Marisa Clifford and Miranda Soto serve as executive producers for Pulse Films, while Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez are executive producers for HBO.
