When two prominent figures from Japan’s entertainment scene come together for candid one-on-one dialogues, expect honest discussions filled with hearty laughter.
Gen Hoshino, a multi-talented musician, actor, and author, engages in monthly conversations with comedian Masayasu Wakabayashi, one half of the acclaimed comedy duo Audrey. Over six months, they delve into their vulnerabilities and concerns. Dubbed “LIGHTHOUSE” by supervising producer Nobuyuki Sakuma, the series shines a light on the everyday worries of ordinary individuals as they confront their own challenges.
Their interactions follow the concept of a “single-line journal,” where they encapsulate their daily experiences and worries in brief written snippets. These lines illuminate intricate struggles, addressing universal themes such as work, family, the future, and relationships.
Set to premiere on August 22 globally, the six episodes are framed within various settings. For instance, the inaugural episode unfolds in Asagaya, a Tokyo neighborhood of significance to both entertainers’ early careers. Hoshino delves into his darker moments, while Wakabayashi vents about his comedy partner. Their conversations, infused with humor, evolve over time, revealing transformations and fresh perspectives.
Hoshino, beyond participating in conversations, also contributes to the show’s music. He not only composed the main theme, “Mad Hope,” but also crafted five new songs inspired by his discussions with Wakabayashi. Live performances of these songs are featured at the episodes’ conclusions.
