Acclaimed filmmaker Lisa Cortés brings “Little Richard: I Am Everything” to television screens on September 4 at 9 pm ET/PT on CNN. The documentary celebrated as “a sublime tribute” and a groundbreaking exploration, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. It unveils the genuine roots of rock n’ roll, revealing Richard Penniman, the originator, in contrast to the whitewashed version of American pop music.
Cortés explains, “I crafted this film to unfold Little Richard’s life – a reflection of rock ‘n roll’s essence and America’s complexity.” Through archival footage, performances, and intimate insights, the documentary paints a vivid picture of Little Richard’s multifaceted journey. Interviews with family, musicians, and eminent Black and queer scholars, including Mick Jagger, Billy Porter, and Nile Rodgers, showcase his artistry as a vehicle for self-expression.
Named “I Am Everything,” the film honors Little Richard’s influence on music and culture, shedding light on his struggle for recognition. Produced by Bungalow Media + Entertainment for CNN Films and Max, in collaboration with Rolling Stone Films, the documentary underscores Richard’s pivotal role in shaping pop culture. Executive producers include Mike Powers, Anita May Rosenstein, Dee Rees, Jason Fine, Gus Wenner, Amy Entelis, and Courtney Sexton.
