Universal Pictures has announced that the horror comedy film “Renfield,” directed by Chris McKay and starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, will have its streaming premiere exclusively on Peacock on June 9th.
The movie, which had a theatrical release on April 14th, revolves around Renfield (played by Nicholas Hoult), who serves as the tortured assistant to the most narcissistic boss in history, Dracula (portrayed by Nicolas Cage). Renfield has spent centuries procuring victims for Dracula and fulfilling his every whim, but he now desires a new life independent of the shadow of the Prince of Darkness. The film explores Renfield’s journey as he tries to escape their toxic and co-dependent relationship.
Apart from Hoult and Cage, “Renfield” also features Awkwafina and Shohreh Aghdashloo in prominent roles. The script was penned by Ryan Ridley, based on a story by Robert Kirkman, as part of Universal’s efforts to revitalize its classic monster library for contemporary audiences.
The movie, produced by McKay, Samantha Nisenboim, Bryan Furst, Sean Furst, Kirkman, and David Alpert, with Todd Lewis as executive producer, did not perform as well as expected at the box office, grossing slightly over $25 million. Reviews for the film were mixed. However, in his review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond praised the film for its entertainment value, particularly highlighting Hoult’s perfect casting and Cage’s exceptional performance.
Described as a contemporary dark comedy with explicit violence and graphic imagery, “Renfield” resonates with modern horror audiences who grew up with iconic characters like Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. Hammond noted that the film’s success lies in Hoult’s likable portrayal of a worn-down Renfield, a character seeking to establish his own self-worth and break free from the demands of his demanding boss.
