Peacock is serving up a groovy treat with a collection of first-look production images from The Continental. Set to premiere in September, this three-part prequel to John Wick takes us back to 1970s New York, where a young Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) rises to become the manager of the eponymous hotel catering to assassins.
The creators, Albert Hughes and Kirk Ward aimed to achieve multiple goals with this project. They wanted to delve into the backstories of familiar characters like Winston and Charon while introducing new faces such as Mel Gibson’s Cormac. They also sought to explore the rules and mythology of the Wick franchise and expand the physical scope of The Continental, revealing unseen areas of the iconic hotel.
Hughes expressed his enthusiasm for creating an impressionistic spin on 1970s New York, where the soundtrack becomes a character in itself, reflecting the diverse tapestry of American culture. Dubbed “Disco Noir,” the series captures the essence of the era, incorporating various musical genres like classic rock, pop, punk, funk, R&B, soul, and reggae.
The challenge for Hughes was leveraging television’s capacity for longer storytelling and deeper character arcs. The format allowed them to create three feature-like films that blend engaging storytelling, unique characters, and the thrilling, action-packed essence cherished by John Wick fans. The team is excited to share their labor of love, confident that it delivers exceptional television at its finest.
