Disney+ has unveiled the official trailer for “American Born Chinese,” an upcoming original series that will be available exclusively on the streaming service starting May 24th. The action-comedy show, which consists of eight episodes, is produced by 20th Television under the Disney Branded Television label. The series is based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name and follows the story of a typical American teenager whose life changes after befriending the son of a mythical god. The show uses comedy, family, and Kung-Fu action to tell a young man’s journey of self-discovery and identity.
The cast of “American Born Chinese” includes a talented international roster, including Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, Ben Wang, International Emmy Award nominee Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu, and Sydney Taylor. The series introduces viewers to a host of iconic Chinese mythical characters, played by guest stars such as Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu as Shiji Niangniang, Ronny Chieng as Ji Gong, Jimmy O. Yang as Ao Guang, James Hong as Jade Emperor, Leonard Wu as Niu Mowang/Bull Demon, and Poppy Liu as Princess Iron Fan. Lisa Lu appears as Ni Yang, an acupuncturist who is about to retire, while Rosalie Chiang plays student activist Suzy Nakamura.
