Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza, a three-part docuseries detailing the story of Lollapalooza, the music festival, is coming on Paramount+. The six-time Emmy nominee Michael John Warren will serve as the director.
The documentary series follows the legendary festival’s 30-plus-year association with its creator, music icon Perry Farrell, as well as the development of the now-global cultural phenomenon that unites fans of all genres and generations.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, the Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and others have all headlined the festival’s original iteration.
Coming before this latest music documentary and docuseries on the streamer is the yacht rock documentary series, Sometimes When We Touch and Behind The Music. It is also the most recent documentary about music festivals after a number of Woodstock’s 99-related projects.
“When Lolla was launched in 1991, the concert industry felt like a boring car ride that was running out gas. We pumped new life into the live music experience and set the foundation for the youth’s counter culture to become important and exciting again. Now more than three decades young, I am happy to have this opportunity to give people an inside look at the festival’s contribution to music history,” Farrell said in a statement.
“As a naive teenager trapped in the doldrums of Suburbia, U.S.A, I attended the first-ever Lollapalooza, and it totally blew my mind! It was dangerous, beautiful and instantly widened my perspective. So, it’s an honor to be entrusted to tell the true story of one of the most astonishing cultural touchstones in the last half-century,” Michael John Warren added.
The executive producers of Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza are James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte for FunMeter and Bruce Gillmer and Amanda Culkowski for MTV Entertainment Studios. Co-executive are producers Matt Kaye and Jordan Bogdonavage. Other EPs include Michael John Warren, Mat Whittington, Daniel Gibbs, and Brian Levy. In collaboration with C3 Presents, MTV Entertainment Studios, and FunMeter serve as producers.
