The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, a heartwarming Japanese series, is coming on Netflix this January 12. It centers on the day-to-day activities of Kiyo Maiko and Sumire, her childhood friend, amid a bustling world filled with Geiko and Maiko courtesans and delectable cuisine. It is a live-action adaptation of Aiko Koyama’s Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san.
The series stars Nana Mori, Natsuki Deguchi, and Aju Makita. Also, the cast includes Kairi Jo, Momoko Fukuchi, Kotoko Wakayanagi, Kotona Minami Lily Franky, Yukiya Kitamura, Toshinori Omi, Kanji Furutachi, Keiko Toda, Kayoko Shiraishi / Keiko Matsuzaka, Ai Hashimoto, Mayu Matsuoka, Arata Iura, and Takako Tokiwa.
The directors of the series Hirokazu Kore-eda, Megumi Tsuno, Hiroshi Okuyama, and Takuma Sato, also serve as writers along with Mami Sunada.

Set in the geisha district of Kyoto, this series follows Sumire, a maiko (apprentice geisha) and Kiyo, a cook at the maiko house where they live, and tells a story of their daily lives through delicious food.
